Einstein Wins The Santa Anita Handicap March 7 at Santa Anita Park
Running for the first time on a synthetic surface, Midnight Cry Stable’s Einstein, ridden by jockey Julien Leparoux, won the $1-million Santa Anita Handicap or the Big ‘Cap at Santa Anita Park on Saturday, March 7.
The 7-year-old son of 1985 Kentucky Derby winner Spend a Buck, Einstein, held off Champs Elysees down the stretch to win the Santa Anita Handicap by 1 length. Pacesetter Matto Mondo finished third, another neck behind.
Trained by Helen Pitts-Blasi, Einstein covered 1 1/4 miles in 2:01.93 and paid $12, $7 and $4.60. Champs Elysees, under jockey Jose Valdivia, Jr., placed second and returned $19.40 and $11.60. Matto Mondo with jockey Rafael Bejarano aboard came in third and paid $5.20 to show.
“He’s a good horse on the turf. He’s a good horse on the dirt. He’s a good horse on anything,” winning jockey Julien Leparoux said. “We didn’t really know about this track, but we were pretty sure he as going to handle it. And he did.”
Einstein has won 9 times, with 3 of his 6 turf victories in Grade I events. Last year, Einstein showed his versatility on the dirt at Churchill Downs, home of the 2009 Kentucky Derby, when he won the Clark Handicap (gr. II) and finished second to 2-time horse of the year Curlin in the Stephen Foster Handicap.
Other horses that raced in Santa Anita‘s Santa Anita Handicap in order of finish: Monba, Magnum (ARG), Dansant (GB), Court Vision, Cowboy Cal, Zambezi Sun (GB), Stream Cat, Cause, Heroi Do Bafra (BRZ) and Blue Exit who broke down in the final turn and track officials said the horse had to be euthanized. Colonel John was scratched.
