Derby Trial Winner Hull Out Of The Preakness Stakes Field
Derby Trial winner Hull will not race in the Preakness Stakes 2009 and instead will run in the Woody Stephens Stakes on June 6 at Belmont Park, home of the Belmont Stakes 2009.
Barry Irwin of co-owner Team Valor said he expects the pace of the Preakness Stakes on May 16 at Pimlico Race Course to be too much for Hull, who is unbeaten but has had only 3 starts. Hull didn’t start as a 2-year-old because of shin problems.
Irwin told the Lexington Herald-Leader the Preakness would have been Hull’s first at such a distance and that he wasn’t comfortable with the speed that would be in the second leg of the Triple Crown. The Woody Stephens is 7 furlongs, while the Preakness is 1 3/16 miles.
The Preakness field is limited to 14 Preakness entries. View the Preakness odds from top online racebooks.
