Derby Trial Field at Churchill Downs April 25
A field of 8 race horses will run in the $100,000 Derby Trial Stakes on opening day April 25 at Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby 2009.
The Derby Trial is the last of the Kentucky Derby prep races. All carrying 117 pounds, Churchill Downs’s 7 1/2-furlong Derby Trial field of race horses with jockeys:
- Silver City ridden by jockey Julien Leparoux
- Tintim Por Tintim ridden by jockey Alan Garcia
- Gato Go Win ridden by jockey Calvin Borel
- Checklist ridden by jockey Shaun Bridgmohan
- Santana Six ridden by jockey John Velazquez
- Rendezvous ridden by jockey Rene Douglas
- Hull ridden by jockey Miguel Mena
- Kensei ridden by jockey Robby Albarado
Clarence Scharbauer Jr.’s Silver City won the Dixieland Stakes at Oaklawn Park and ran second to Old Fashioned, who was then the one of the early favorite Kentucky Derby contenders, in the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park. A fifth-place finish in the Rebel Stakes ended Silver City’s pursuit of the Kentucky Derby, and Saturday’s Derby Trial will be his first start since that March 14 outing.
None of the race horses entered in the Derby Trial is expected to attempt to run back in the May 2 Kentucky Derby 135.
The Derby Trial Stakes is the 10th race in Churchill Downs’s April 25 horse racing program. Derby Trial post time is 5:17 pm.
