Charitable Man To Race In The Travers Stakes 2009 at Saratoga August 29

Race horse trainer Kiaran McLaughlin confirmed that Mr. and Mrs. William K. Warren Jr.’s Charitable Man, third in the Jim Dandy Stakes, would make his next start in the $1-million Travers Stakes 2009 on August 29 at Saratoga.

Online Horse Betting“The race is coming up extremely tough,” said race horse trainer Kiaran McLaughlin. “We talked about the Pennsylvania Derby [September 7 at Philadelphia Park], but if we can win the Travers or run well in it, it will be a big deal for the horse.”

A son of Lemon Drop Kid, Charitable Man won the Grade 2 Futurity at Belmont Park last fall and the Grade 2 Peter Pan this spring before finishing a well-backed fourth in the Belmont Stakes.

“We had always been pointing towards the Travers, having prepped in the Jim Dandy, but it’s an extremely tough field, everyone’s going,” said Kiaran McLaughlin. “Now, if Rachel Alexandra does decide to enter, then we’ll look at other options.”

A decision on where the 3-year-old filly Rachel Alexandra will make her next start is expected from owner Jess Jackson early next week.

SBG Global RacebookOther likely Travers Stakes entries besides the Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird and Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird for the 1 1/4-mile Travers Stakes “Mid-Summer Derby” are the Nick Zito-trained Our Edge, Jim Dandy runner-up Warrior’s Reward and possibly Jackson’s Jim Dandy winner, Kensei, depending on where his stablemate filly Rachel Alexandra winds up.

Questionable in the Travers Stakes field is Winstar Farms’ Hold Me Back.

The Preakness winner filly Rachel Alexandra has also been nominated to two other races at Saratoga Race Course — the Personal Ensign (gr. I) against females on August 30 and the Woodward (gr. I) against males on September 5 — as well as the Pennsylvania Derby.
