Carlsbad Wins The Rancho Bernardo Handicap at Del Mar September 4

Dennis Weir’s Carlsbad, ridden by jockey Tyler Baze, won the $200,000 Rancho Bernardo Handicap at Del Mar on Friday, September 4.

SBG Global RacebookTrained by Jeff Mullins, Carlsbad covered 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:14.93 and paid $4.80, $3.40 and $2.60. Lady Lumberjack, under jockey Michael Baze, placed second and returned $4.80 and $3.80. Golden Doc A with jockey Alonso Quinonez aboard came in third and paid $10.40 to show.

The Rancho Bernardo Handicap was jockey Tyler Baze’s first race since injuring the pinky finger on his left hand 2 weeks ago when he was unseated by his mount, R. Bee Ess, en route to the gate for the tenth race August 22. Before the injury, jockey Tyler Baze was a contender for top rider at Del Mar this summer.

Carlsbad earned $120,000 for the Rancho Bernardo win and a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint this fall at Santa Anita as part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge.

Other horses that raced in Del Mar’s Rancho Bernardo Handicap in order of finish: Ashley’s Kitty, She’s Cheeky, Evita Argentina, So Long Sonoma, Moon de French and Stolen Heart.
