Capt. Candyman Can Wins Hutcheson Stakes at Gulfstream Park January 30
Joseph Rausch and David Zell’s Kentucky Derby hopeful Capt. Candyman Can, ridden by jockey Julien Leparoux, wins the $150,000 Hutcheson Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Friday, January 30.
The Hutcheson Stakes is one of the prep races for the 2009 Kentucky Derby on May 2 at Churchill Downs.
Trained by Ian Wilkes, Capt. Candyman Can covered 7 furlongs in 1:23.69 and paid $7.40, $3.80 and $2.80;. Hello Broadway, under jockey Edgar Prado, placed second and returned $3.40 and $2.60. Bee Cee Cee with jockey Cornelio Velasquez aboard came in third and paid $5.80 to show.
“The second horse (Hello Broadway) ran a great race, too, and never gave up,” said race horse trainer Ian Wilkes. “We’ll talk it over with the owners, but the Fountain of Youth Stakes (Feb. 28) would certainly be logical.”
Other horses that raced in Gulfstsream‘s Hutcheson Stakes in order of finish: Salo Jak, Rocketing Returns and Break Water Edison. Z Day was scratched.
