Trained by Brian Koriner, California Flag ran 6 1/2 furlongs on downhill turf in 1:11.28 and paid $8.80, $5.60 and $3.80. Gotta Have Her, under jockey Tyler Baze, placed second and returned $8.80 and $5.60. Cannonball with jockey Ramon Dominguez aboard came in third and paid $4.80 to show.
It was the first Breeders’ Cup win for 20-year-old jockey Joe Talamo and race horse trainer Brian Koriner, who along with California Flag are based in California.
Other horses that raced in Santa Anita’s Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint in order of finish: Delta Storm, Canadian Ballet, Silver Timber, Noble Court, El Gato Malo, Get Funky, Square Eddie, Diamondrella (GB), Lord Shanakill, Desert Code and Strike the Deal. Cherokee Heaven and Tenga Cat were scratched.
