Bullsbay Wins The Whitney Handicap at Saratoga Race Course August 8

Mitchell Ranch’s longshot Bullsbay, ridden by jockey Jeremy Rose, won Saturday’s $750,000 Whitney Handicap at Saratoga Race Course August 8.

SBG Global RacebookAs part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge, the Whitney Handicap winner Bullsbay qualified for the Breeders’ Cup Classic on November 7 at Santa Anita.

Trained by Graham Motion, Bullsbay covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.12 and paid $39.60, $12 and $5.90. Macho Again, under jockey Robby Albarado, placed second and returned $4.90 and $3.40. Commentator with jockey John Velazquez aboard came in third and paid $3.20 to show.

“Today was beautiful,” jockey Jeremy Rose said. “He fired on all cylinders; Graham had him ready, and it was a perfect trip. I made the lead way too early, but I couldn’t help it. He was just cutting through traffic way too easy. I didn’t want to go that early, but I had to go with the horse.”

Hall of Fame race horse trainer Nick Zito said he was proud of Commentator in defeat. The 8-year-old gelding Commentator was bidding to join Discovery and Kelso as the only 3-time winners of the Whitney Handicap.

“Father Time catches up to everyone,” race horse trainer Nick Zito said. “He tried. He gave it everything he had. There were a lot of great trainers and a lot of great horses in the race. Bullsbay always runs a good race. It’s up to (owners) Mr. and Mrs. (Tracy) Farmer, but it is my wish to retire him.”

Other horses that raced in Saratoga‘s Whitney Handicap in order of finish: Tizway, Dry Martini and Smooth Air. Asiatic Boy was scratched.
