2009 Kentucky Oaks Field at Churchill Downs May 1
L and M Partners’ Rachel Alexandra will put a 4-race win streak on the line Friday when she faces 7 fillies in the 135th running of the $500,000 Kentucky Oaks May 1 at Churchill Downs, home of the 2009 Kentucky Derby.

- Be Fair ridden by jockey Rafael Bejarano, 15-1
- Stone Legacy ridden by jockey Kent Desormeaux, 30-1
- Gabby’s Golden Gal ridden by jockey Victor Espinoza, 10-1
- Justwhistledixie ridden by jockey Julien Leparoux, 5-2
- Rachel Alexandra ridden by jockey Calvin Borel, 3-5
- Nan ridden by jockey Corey Nakatani, 20-1
- Flying Spur ridden by jockey Garrett Gomez, 8-1
Rachel Alexandra drew post position 6 for the 2009 Kentucky Oaks and Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia has installed Rachel Alexandra as the 3-5 odds-on favorite for the 1 1/8 mile Kentucky Oaks. The daughter of Medaglia d’Oro is trained by Hal Wiggins and scheduled to be ridden by jockey Calvin Borel. Each of her connections is seeking their first victory in the Kentucky Oaks.
The second choice on the morning line at 5-2 is West Point Thoroughbreds, Lakland Farm and R. Dee Hubbard’s Justwhistledixie. Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, the daughter of Dixie Union brings a 5-race winning streak into her first meeting with Rachel Alexandra. Her two most recent scores came in the Davona Dale (gr. II) and Bonnie Miss (gr. II) at Gulfstream Park.
Jockey Julien Leparoux, who rode Justwhistledixie to the Bonnie Miss victory, has the mount Friday and will break from post position 5.
Hall of Fame race horse trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who had sent out 4 Kentucky Oaks winners, will be represented by a trio of runners in the 135th renewal of the Kentucky Oaks: Lukas will saddle Westrock Stables’ Be Fair and the Marylou Whitney Stables’ duo of Stone Legacy and Tweeter in Friday’s race.
D. Wayne Lukas will send out Flying Private in the Kentucky Derby 135 on Saturday.
Race horse trainer Bob Baffert, who will enter horse racing’s Hall of Fame this year with his 1999 Kentucky Oaks winner Silverbulletday, will saddle Arnold Zetcher’s Gabby’s Golden Gal in Friday’s Kentucky Oaks with jockey Victor Espinoza to ride. Bob Baffert’s Kentucky Derby hopeful is Pioneerof the Nile.
Bill Mott, another member of racing’s Hall of Fame and the all-time leading trainer at Churchill Downs, will saddle Mike Rutherford’s Flying Spur in the Kentucky Oaks 2009. Flying Spur’s best career effort was a runner-up finish to Rachel Alexandra in the Fair Grounds Oaks. Jockey Garrett Gomez, who won the 2007 Kentucky Oaks on Rags To Riches, has the mount.
The 2009 Kentucky Oaks, America’s top race for 3-year-old fillies, is the 11th race in Churchill Downs’s May 1 horse racing program. Kentucky Oaks post time is 5:45 pm.
