Yankee Bravo Wins California Derby at Golden Gate Fields
Yankee Bravo remains undefeated as he put another victory in his belt by surging from behind and winning the $150,000 California Derby at Golden Gate Fields on Sunday, January 27.
Ridden by Alex Solis, Yankee Bravo ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.57 and paid $5.20, $3.40 and $3 in the 94th running of the California Derby which is also an important Kentucky Derby prep race.
Coming in one length behind, Cafe Tortoni under jockey Luis Contreras returned $10 and $5.60. Third placer Victory Pete with Apprentice Jockey Eclipse Award winner Joe Talamo paid $5.40 to show.
The Kentucky-bred colt trained by Irishman Paddy Gallagher, Yankee Bravo, broke his maiden by six lengths at Redcar in England last September then won the Eddie Logan Stakes on turf at Santa Anita Park last month.
He came on strong after a slow start on Golden Gate Fields’ synthetic track. The California Derby was the first start over a synthetic surface for Yankee Bravo who also won both of his previous races in the same fashion by coming from far behind. The son of Yankee Gentleman is now 3-3 in his brief career.
Tres Borrachos finished fourth in Golden Gate Fields’ California Derby followed by Robscarvic, Medjool, Spinning Sound (IRE), Overland, Moonlit Master, Bert’s Law, Many Rivers and Capture the Call.
