A small field of 4 horses will race in Saturday’s $150,000 Withers Stakes (gr. III) at Aqueduct April 26.
In 2006, the Withers Stakes was won by the eventual Preakness Stakes winner, Bernardini.
The Withers Stakes at 1 miles is one of the final 2008 Kentucky Derby prep races. Three-year-olds horses racing this Saturday at Aqueduct with jockeys and weight line up as follows:
Harlem Rocker ridden by jockey Eibar Coa carries 116 lbs.
J Be K ridden by jockey Garrett Gomez, 123 lbs.
Double Or Nothing ridden by jockey Edgar Prado, 118 lbs.
Face the Cat ridden by jockey John Velazquez, 116 lbs.
J Be K was the winner of the Bay Shore Stakes (gr. III) April 5 at Aqueduct. Prior to that, Zayat Stables’ J Be K finished a disappointing 8th behind Pyro, one of the leading 2008 Kentucky Derby entries, in the Louisiana Derby (gr. II). Jockey Garrett Gomez will be riding for horse trainer Steve Asmussen.
Face the Cat ran 8th in the Florida Derby which was won by the favorite in the Kentucky Derby, Big Brown. The Todd Pletcher trainee, Face the Cat will be ridden by jockey John Velazquez for Saturday’s Withers Stakes.
Another Todd Pletcher trainee, Harlem Rocker, who in his career debut, a 1 mile allowance race last February 14, won by 3/4 lengths in 1:35 1/5. Jockey Eibar Coa will take the mount.
Double or Nothing will break from the third post under recently entered into the Hall of Fame jockey Edgar Prado.
The Withers Stakes is scheduled as the 3rd race in Aqueduct’s April 26 horse racing program. Local post time is 1:58 pm. Included in its race card is the $100,000 Beaugay Handicap at 1 1/16 miles on turf for 3-year-olds and up fillies and mares.
