War Pass Off The 2008 Kentucky Derby Trail

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner War Pass, last year’s 2-year-old champion, was ruled out of the 2008 Kentucky Derby on Saturday due to a minor leg fracture.

Horse trainer Nick Zito said that X-rays had revealed War Pass has a small fracture in the sesamoid in the left front ankle. The colt is expected to be sidelined for a “few months.”

In what horse trainer Nick Zito described as a “tough” race, War Pass finished second in Aqueduct‘s Wood Memorial two weeks ago. The horse had not worked out since the race.

“The Wood was a killer, anybody who saw it knows it was a gut-wrenching performance,” said Zito, a two-time Derby winner. “The race took its toll, but when he got back to the barn at Belmont, he was great – that’s the heart he’s got.”
