Ventura Wins Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint October 24 at Santa Anita Park

SBG Global RacebookJuddmonte Farms’s Ventura, ridden by jockey Garrett Gomez, stumbled at the start but made a late running victory in the $916,000 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Oak Tree at Santa Anita Park on Breeders’ Cup Day Friday, October 24.

Trained by Bobby Frankel, Ventura covered 7 furlongs in 1:19.90 and paid $7.60, $3.40 and $3. Last year’s Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint winner Indian Blessing, under jockey John Velazquez, held on to second and returned $3.40 and $2.40. Zaftig with jockey Rafael Bejarano aboard came in third and paid $4 to show.

It was the fifth career Breeders’ Cup win for Gomez, who rode Indian Blessing last year, and sixth for race horse trainer Bobby Frankel, moving him into a tie for third with Richard Mandela and Neil Drysdale.

Other horses that raced in the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Santa Anita in order of finish: Miraculous Miss, Tizzy’s Tune, Intangaroo, Magnificience, Jazzy, Lady Sprinter, La Tee, Dearest Trickski, Dream Rush and Tiz Elemental. Indyanne was scratched.
