Vacare held off Gotta Have Her and In My Glory to score a 1 length victory in the $150,000 Dahlia Handicap on the closing day at Hollywood Park on Sunday, December 21.
Ridden by jockey Jose Valdivia Jr., Vacare covered 1 1/16 miles on the turf in 1:43.13 and paid $3.60, $2.60 and $2.40 as the odds-on favorite. Gotta Have Her, under jockey Richard Migliore, returned $3.60 and $2.80. In My Glory with jockey Martin Garcia paid $5.40 to show.
With the Dahlia Handicap victory, Vacare banked $90,000 with the Dahlia Handicap win to boost her earnings to $1.2 million and race horse trainer Christophe Clement got his 1,000th win.
Connections of the 5-year-old mare Vacare said said she will be retired.
“She’s such a pleasure to ride. I’m going to miss her a lot, but at least she goes out a winner,” jockey Jose Valdivia, Jr. said.
Other horses that raced in Hollywood Park’s Dahlia Handicap in order of finish: I Can See, Lady Digby, Green Lyons, Belle Allure and Don’t Forget Faith. Place de L’Etoile, Sensational Love, Storybook and Valbenny were scratched.
