The $2 million UAE Derby (UAE-G2), one of the 2008 Kentucky Derby prep races, for 3-year olds at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse will be run on Saturday, March 29.
Raced at 1 1/8 miles, the $1.2 million UAE Derby first prize can be a ticket to be part of the 2008 Kentucky Derby contenders list for those aspiring to be part of the Triple Crown Trail.
The field of the Nad Al Sheba’s UAE Derby with jockeys and weight lines up as follows:
Numaany (USA) ridden by jockey Kerrin McEvoy, 109 lbs.
My Indy (ARG) ridden by jockey Lanfranco Dettori, 106 lbs.
Massive Drama (USA) ridden by jockey Garrett Gomez, 111 lbs.
Rock Ascot (URU) ridden by jockey Gaven Birrer, 104 lbs.
Ukranian (BRZ) ridden by jockey Richard Mullen, 102 lbs.
Light Green (BRZ) ridden by jockey Michael Kinane, 110 lbs.
Royal Vintage (SAF) ridden by jockey Kevin Shea, 116 lbs.
Honour Devil (ARG) ridden by jockey John Murtagh, 115 lbs.
Zain Alma Aenee (KSA) (Scratched on veterinary grounds)
Strike The Deal (USA) ridden by jockey Ryan Moore, 112 lbs.
Iide Kenshin (JPN) ridden by jockey Shinji Fujita, 106 lbs.
Gambling is illegal in the UAE but online racebooks such as Bodog Racebook is taking wagers for Saturday’s UAE Derby.
Massive Drama will be making his first start since switching to the Dale Romans barn, while bidding to become the first American-based horse to land the UAE Derby at Nad al Sheba. Massive Drama is the winner of the Hollywood Prevue Stakes (gr. III), finished 3rd in the CashCall Futurity (gr. I) last season, the San Rafael Stakes (gr. III) and San Vicente Stakes (gr. III) in his campaign for former horse trainer Bob Baffert.
The top threats in the U.A.E. Derby are the Mike de Kock-trained pair of Royal Vintage and Honour Devil, who have traded decisions in the first two Dubai classics. The Argentinean-bred Honour Devil drew first blood in the U.A.E. Two Thousand Guineas (UAE-G3), but the South African-bred Royal Vintage turned the tables with a hard-fought score in the Al Bastakiya last time out.
Horse trainer Mike De Kock rates Royal Vintage the better of the two in terms of raw ability, yet gives Honour Devil immense credit for being a tough customer who never goes down without a struggle. Both promise to put on another thrilling show on Saturday’s UAE Derby.
American Triple Crown nominee Strike The Deal, trained by Jeremy Noseda, was 4th in the inaugural Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. He will break from stall 11 and jockey Ryan Moore will be taking the mount.
The UAE Derby is the 3rd race in Nad Al Sheba Racecourse’s 7-horse race program on Dubai World Cup Day, March 29. Estimated local post time is 18:15 UTC+4.
