Tiago Makes 2008 Debut at Santa Anita’s San Fernando Stakes

The winner of the 2007 Santa Anita Derby and Goodwood Stakes, Tiago, who has been sidelined after finishing 5th in Breeders’ Cup Classic, makes his 2008 debut as a 4-year-old in the $200,000 San Fernando Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita Park on Saturday, January 12.

Tiago, also victorious in Hollywood Park’s Swaps Breeders’ Cup Stakes (gr. II), has been working strongly for his return to racing in the 56th running of the San Fernando Stakes.

“He looks like he’s ready,” said John Shirreffs who trains the Pleasant Tap homebred for Jerry and Ann Moss. Tiago’s earnings of $1,240,270 have been amassed from just nine starts with a 4-0-2 record.

The complete field for the San Fernando Stakes, the 10th race in Saturday’s card at Santa Anita Park, with jockeys and weights arranged in position order are:

  1. Ravel under jockey Garrett Gomez carries 116 lbs.
  2. Big Bad Leroybrown under jockey Tyler Baze, 118 lbs.
  3. Air Commander under jockey Aaron Gryder, 116 lbs.
  4. Johnny Eves under jockey David Flores, 120 lbs.
  5. Monzante under jockey Michael Baze, 116 lbs.
  6. Sahara Heat under jockey Bejarano, 118 lbs.
  7. Tiago under jockey Mike Smith, 122 lbs.
  8. Frank the Barber under jockey Espinoza, 118 lbs.
  9. Smooth and Savvy under jockey Jon Court, 116 lbs.
  10. Great Hunter under jockey Corey Nakatani, 120 lbs.
  11. Hurry Up Austin under jockey Solis, 116 lbs.
  12. Monterey Jazz under jockey Joe Talamo, 120 lbs.

Among Tiago’s rivals in the San Fernando is Johnny Eves, victorious in the Strub Series’ first leg, the seven-furlong Malibu Stakes at 11-0 odds on December 26. The 4-year-old gelding, however, will be trying two turns for the first time for trainer Jay Robbins and Mooncoin LLC. Johnny Eves, ridden by David Flores, shows a 5-2-0 record in 10 starts for earnings of $324,720.

Ravel will attempt to right himself for horse trainer Todd Pletcher and jockey Garrett Gomez after running fourth at 6-5 odds in his comeback in the December 8 Native Diver Handicap at Hollywood Park. Ravel was sidelined for most of 2007 after a brilliant victory in Santa Anita’s Sham Stakes (gr. III) in February had stamped him as a leader on last year’s Derby Trail.

Eleven horse races will comprise Saturday’s card with first post advanced to 11:45 in the morning as Santa Anita Park aims to gradually make up the canceled races lost over the past weekend and on this past Monday when more than 7 inches of rain fell in the area making the track unsafe for racing.

Other stakes races scheduled for Santa Anita Saturday include the $150,000 San Rafael Stakes (gr. III) (5th race), a race that serves as the first major prep locally for Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown hopefuls; the $150,000 San Pasqual Handicap (gr. II) for 3-year-olds (7th race).
