Tale of Ekati Wins Wood Memorial at Aqueduct; War Pass Places Second
Tale of Ekati, ridden by jockey Edgar Prado, won the $750,000 Wood Memorial (gr. I) by half a length over Breeders’ Cup Juvenile champion War Pass on Saturday, April 5, at Aqueduct.
Tale of Ekati and War Pass are expected to head to the 2008 Kentucky Derby on May 3 at Louisville’s Churchill Downs.
Trained by Barclay Tagg, Tale of Ekati raced 1 1/8 miles in 1:52.35 and paid $19, $6.30 and $3.60. War Pass with jockey Cornelio Velasquez aboard returned $3.70 and $2.60. Court Vision under jockey Garrett Gomez paid $2.40 to show.
The son of Tale of the Cat, Tale of Ekati, who is named after owner Charles E. Fipke’s Canadian diamond mine, won for the third time in six career starts and earned $450,000 from the Wood Memorial.
New York-bred Giant Moon was a neck back, fourth in Aqueduct’s Wood Memorial, followed by Anak Nakal, Spurrier, Roman Emperor, Texas Wildcat and Inner Light. First Commandment was scratched.
