Irish-bred Red Rocks is a multiple-Grade I winner on turf. Red Rocks won the 2006 John Deere Breeders’ Cup Turf. In his last start, Red Rocks defeated 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner and Horse of the Year Curlin in the July 12 Man O’ War Stakes at Belmont Park. Jockey Javier Castellano will be riding Red Rocks in the Sword Dancer.
After the Sword Dancer, Red Rocks is expected to make his final Breeders’ Cup prep in the $600,000 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational (gr. IT) at Belmont Park on September 27.
Last year’s Sword Dancer winner, 5-year-old Grand Couturier is hoping for his second consecutive victory. Grand Couturier has been winless in 4 starts since his Sword Dancer victory. Jockey Alan Garcia will be mounting Grand Couturier at Saratoga this Saturday.
Bushwood Stable’s Better Talk Now, who had to scratch last year the day before the Sword Dancer, is here to match John’s Call as the only 9-year-olds to win the Sword Dancer. Better Talk Now won the Sword Dancer as a 5-year-old in 2004, the same year he won the Breeders’ Cup Turf. Jockey Ramon Dominguez has the call for race horse trainer Graham Motion.
The Sword Dancer Invitational is the 8th race in Saratoga Race Course’s August 16 horse racing program. Sword Dancer Invitational post time is 4:56 pm.
