Curlin opened 2008 with a victory in the Jaguar Trophy at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse in Dubai followed by a 7 3/4-length romp in the Dubai World Cup. Prior to that, Curlin won the Breeders’ Cup Classic last October at Monmouth Park, the Jockey Club Gold Cup as well as the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico.
In his 4-year-old debut in the United States, Curlin will break from post position one under jockey Robby Albarado who will bid for his second straight Foster victory after he guided 2007 Stephen Foster winner Flashy Bull to victory.
Brazilian-bred Einstein enters the Stephen Foster Handicap off victory in the May 3 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic (gr. I) on Kentucky Derby Day at Churchill Downs. Einstein ran 6th in the Donn Handicap (gr. I) in his lone main track start since 2006, but he notched his first career victory in only start over the main track at Churchill Downs. Owned by Patricia Cunningham and Melissa Green, Lessees, and trained by Helen Pitts, Einstein is slated to carry 118 pounds and be ridden by jockey Julien Leparoux this Saturday.
The 4-year-old son of Dixie Union, Grasshopper, ran 5th in the mud as the favorite in the Pimlico Special (gr. I) in his most recent start. Grasshopper has won 2 of 3 starts over the Churchill Downs main track. Trained by Neil Howard for owners W.S. Farish and E.J. Hudson Jr., Grasshopper will carry 117 pounds and be ridden by jockey Garrett Gomez in the Stephen Foster Handicap.
Trained by William “Buff” Bradley, Brass Hat will be carrying 116 pounds on Churchill Downs this Saturday and will be ridden by jockey Calvin Borel who won the 2006 Stephen Foster with 91-1 longshot Seek Gold.
