A field of 8 older horses will comprise the $150,000 San Marcos Stakes (gr. IIT) at Santa Anita Park on Saturday, January 19.
Four-year-old and up horses racing in Santa Anita’s San Marcos Stakes, run at 1 1/4 miles on turf, together with their riders are:
Ramazutti ridden by jockey David Flores carries 115 lbs.
Niagara Causeway ridden by jockey Jon Court carries 115 lbs.
Rocket Legs ridden by jockey Mike Smith carries 117 lbs.
Masterly ridden by jockey Joseph Talamo carries 115 lbs.
Decado ridden by jockey Alex Solis carries 115 lbs.
Champs Elysees ridden by jockey Garrett Gomez carries 115 lbs.
Medici Code ridden by jockey Martin Pedroza carries 122 lbs.
Obrigado ridden by jockey Rafael Bejarano carries 115 lbs.
Carrying a top weight of 122 pounds is Medici Code who is looking for a victory since winning the 1 1/8 turf mile Del Mar Derby (gr. IIT) last September. The 4-year-old Medicean gelding trained by Darrell Vienna was fifth in the Indiana Derby (gr. II), then came back to the turf for a 2nd place finish in the Hollywood Derby (gr. IIT) and a 3rd place finish in the San Gabriel Handicap (gr. IIT) at Santa Anita last December.
Champs Elysees, trained by Bobby Frankel, is a full brother to champions Intercontinental and Banks Hill and grade I winner Cacique, as well as Brazilian grade I victor Heroi Do Bafra. Juddmonte Farms’ homebred Champs Elysees finished 2nd after Sunriver in the Hollywood Turf Cup last December.
Todd Pletcher’s Rocket Legs, who his maiden on the sixth try in a 1 1/2 mile turf route at Kentucky Downs last September, is making his graded stakes debut. The 4-year-old Dynaformer colt has won two other races and finished 2nd in a 1 1/8 mile allowance with all three starts coming over synthetic surfaces since then.
Santa Anita Park’s $150,000 San Marcos Stakes is scheduled as the 9th race on Saturday’s card. Approximate post time is 4:07 pm PST.
