All carrying 122 pounds, the field of 11 three-year-olds entered in the Santa Anita Derby at 1 1/8 miles on Santa Anita Park’s synthetic track surface with jockeys and morning line odds:
Yankee Bravo ridden by jockey Alex Solis with morning line odds of 4-1
Signature Move ridden by jockey Michel Baze, 30-1
Coast Guard ridden by jockey Joseph Talamo, 20-1
Bob Black Jack ridden by jockey Richard Migliore, 6-1
Meetingwithdestiny ridden by jockey Joel Rosario, 30-1
Rosso Corsa ridden by jockey Alonso Quinonez, 50-1
If all 11 start, the Santa Anita Derby field size will match 2005 as the largest since 13 ran in 1981.
The bay colt of 2-time Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Tiznow, Colonel John, owned and bred by WinStar Farm and trained by Eoin Harty, defeated El Gato Malo by half a length in the Sham Stakes (gr. III) last March 1. The Sham Stakes is raced at the same distance as the Santa Anita Derby. Colonel John, reunited with regular rider Corey Nakatani, starts from gate 5. Jockey Corey Nakatani missed the Sham Stakes with a broken collarbone and Garrett Gomez had the mount.
West Point Thoroughbred’s El Gato Malo, a gelding by El Corredor trained by Craig Dollase, had won his first three starts, two of them two-turn stakes, by a combined 16 lengths before he was tripped up by Colonel John as the 7-10 favorite in the Sham Stakes. El Gato Malo drew post position 8 with jockey David Flores aboard.
Georgie Boy’s late defection helped influence an 11th-hour decision to enter Bob Black Jack who had been preparing for the Arkansas Derby (gr. II). Bob Black Jack, trained by Jim Kasparoff, is 6-1 on the morning line odds. Attempting a route of ground for the first time after five sprints, Bob Black Jack set much of the pace in the March 15 San Felipe Stakes before fading to third, 1 3/4 lengths behind Georgie Boy in a game try.
Yankee Bravo, son of Pulpit, ran third to another Pulpit offspring, early Kentucky Derby favorite Pyro, in the Louisiana Derby (gr. II) at the Fair Grounds on March 8. Yankee Bravo, with 4-1 morning line odds in the Santa Anita Derby, will break from post position 1 under jockey Alex Solis.
The 71st running of the Santa Anita Derby is scheduled as the 6th race in Santa Anita Park’s April 5 horse racing program. Estimated post time is 2:30 pm PST. Included in its race card is the $200,000 Potrero Grande Handicap (gr. II) for 4-year-olds and up at 6 1/2 furlongs (4th race), the $150,000 Arcadia Handicap (gr. II) for 4-year-olds and up at 1 mile on turf (7th race), and the $150,000 Providencia Stakes (gr. II) for 3-year-olds at 1 mile on turf (9th race).
