San Felipe Stakes on March 15 at Santa Anita Park

Nine 3-year-olds are competing in the $250,000 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita Park on Saturday, March 15.

The San Felipe Stakes is one of the three 2008 Kentucky Derby prep races scheduled for Saturday. The other two being the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park and the Tampa Bay Derby at Tampa Bay Downs.

The complete field of the 1 1/16 mile San Felipe Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita Park with jockeys and weight:

  1. Gayego ridden by jockey Mike Smith carries 115 lbs.
  2. Southwest ridden by jockey Corey Nakatani, 115 lbs.
  3. Bob Black Jack ridden by jockey David Flores, 117 lbs.
  4. Georgie Boy ridden by jockey Michael Baze (replacing Rafael Bejarano who fractured 2 of his vertebra in a spill at Santa Anita Park Thursday), 117 lbs.
  5. Indian Sun ridden by jockey Alex Solis, 115 lbs.
  6. Go for Cover ridden by jockey Martin Pendroza (replacing Michael Baze), 115 lbs.
  7. Chop House George ridden by jockey Joe Talamo, 115 lbs.
  8. Shediak (FR) ridden by jockey Julien Leparoux, 115 lbs.
  9. High Stakes Silver ridden by jockey Martin Garcia, 115 lbs.

San Vicente Stakes winner Georgie Boy carries top weight of 117 pounds together with Sunshine Millions Dash winner Bob Black Jack.

The Tribal Rule gelding, Georgie Boy, won the San Vicente Stakes by 3 1/4 lengths in his 3-year-old debut last February 10. In his final race as a 2-year-old, he rallied from 12th to win the Del Mar Futurity (gr. I) by a half-length. Georgie Boy has a career record of 3-2-1 in 6 starts. Jockey Rafael Bejarano will take the mount in the San Felipe Stakes.

Bob Black Jack set a world record for six furlongs of 1:06.53 on a Santa Anita Park’s Cushion Track in the Sunshine Millions Dash last January 26 where he led from start to finish for horse trainer James Kasparoff. Bob Black Jack has won 3 of 5 starts and will be ridden by regular jockey David Flores this Saturday.

Cecil Peacock’s Indian Sun, by Indian Charlie, finished 4th in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (gr. II) and second to El Gato Malo in the San Rafael Stakes (gr. III) on the synthetic track this year. Jockey Alex Solis will be riding Indian Sun for horse trainer Dan Hendricks.

The French-bred colt of Triple B Farms, Shediak, trained by Doug O’Neill will be making his U.S. debut under jockey Julien Leparoux.

The San Felipe Stakes is scheduled as the 9th horse race in Santa Anita Park’s 10-race program on Saturday, March 15. Estimated post time of the San Felipe Stakes is 4:30 pm CST.
