Five 3-year-olds were entered in the $200,000 Robert B. Lewis Stakes (gr. II) at 1 1/16 miles on Santa Anita Park’s Cushion Track on Saturday, February 2.

The Robert B. Lewis Stakes is one of the Kentucky Derby prep races scheduled for Saturday. The other being the Swale Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

Horses racing in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita Park line up as follows:

  1. Indian Sun ridden by jockey Alex Solis carries 115
  2. Crown of Thorns ridden by jockey Victor Espinoza, 115
  3. Coast Guard ridden by jockey Rafael Bejarano, 115
  4. Reflect Times (JPN) ridden by jockey Mike Smith, 117
  5. Meal Penalty ridden by jockey Garrett Gomez, 117

Crown of Thorns, from the first crop of Louisiana Derby (gr. II) winner Repent out of the Thunder Gulch mare Crowning Touch, ran an impressive race when he broke his maiden at seven furlongs in his second start on January 1 at Santa Anita.

Dan Hendricks trainee, Indian Sun, has been placed in graded stakes on both grass and synthetic tracks. Indian Sun came in 5th, 3 1/2 lengths behind the victorious Into Mischief, in CashCall Futurity (gr. I) at Hollywood Park last December. In his most recent start, Indian Sun finished 2nd behind unbeaten 2008 Kentucky Derby contender El Gato Malo in the San Rafael Stakes at Santa Anita Park.

Jockey Rafael Bejarano will be teaming up for the first time with Amerman Racing’s Coast Guard who broke his maiden on December 29 when stretched out to a 1 mile route distance by trainer David Hofmans.

Eclipse Award winner Garrett Gomez will be aboard Todd Pletcher trainee Meal Penalty who won the first two starts of his career back east but has not fared as well in three West Coast starts. The son of Tale of the Cat is coming off a 5th place finish at odds of 19-10 in the San Pedro Stakes last January 20.

Japanese-bred Reflect Times, owned by Koji Maeda and trained by John Shirreffs, will be ridden by jockey Mike Smith on Saturday’s Robet B. Lewis Stakes. The French Deputy colt broke his maiden at Del Mar at six furlongs last September. He returned almost five months later to defeat a first-level allowance group by one length going 6 1/2 furlongs at Santa Anita Park.

The Robert B. Lewis Stakes is scheduled as the 5th race in Santa Anita’s February 2 race card. Estimated post time is 2:05 in the afternoon PST.
