Recapturetheglory Wins Illinois Derby at Hawthorne Race Course
Recapturetheglory, ridden by jockey E.T. Baird, overcame the 15-1 odds and beat horse betting favorite Denis of Cork in the $500,000 Illinois Derby (gr. II), the first and only 2008 Kentucky Derby prep race at Hawthorne Race Course, on Saturday, April 5.
Trained and co-owned by Louie Roussel III, Recapturetheglory covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.01 and paid $33.80, $15.60 and $10. Coming in 4 lengths behind, Golden Spikes, under jockey Timothy Thornton, returned $6.80 and $5.40. Z Humor with jockey Rene Douglas aboard is third and paid $4.80 to show.
Atoned finished fourth in the Illinois Derby. Instill and Real Appeal were sixth and last.
Recapturetheglory earned $300,000 for the Illinois Derby win, establishing enough graded earnings to be one of the 2008 Kentucky Derby contenders.
“Louis Roussel named this wonderful racehorse Recapturetheglory because the Kentucky Derby got away from us,” co-owner Ronald Lemarque said referring to the campaign of their 1988 Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes winner, Risen Star.
