Rebellion Expected To Race In A Breeders’ Cup Challenge Event, The San Diego Handicap
The 5-year-old British-bred race horse, Rebellion, is expected to make his 2nd start in Southern California in the space of six weeks when he goes to the post in Del Mar’s $300,000 San Diego Handicap (gr. II) at 1 1/16 miles next Saturday, July 19.
The Del Mar date is part of a nationwide campaign designed by Maryland-based race horse trainer H. Graham Motion for the son of Mozart, Rebellion. In his first venture west, Rebellion won Hollywood Park’s Ack Ack Handicap (gr. III) at 7 1/2 furlongs last June 5, making the Inglewood, California, oval the horse’s 7th track to run over.
The Ack Ack victory, with jockey Rafael Bejarano in the irons, was his 2nd graded win in a row, the first coming in Keeneland’s Commonwealth Stakes (gr. II) at 7 furlongs on April 12. In both races, Rebellion came with a late rush to win.
Rebellion, who will be stretching out beyond a mile after two long sprint victories, is scheduled to work Saturday at Motion’s Fair Hill base and if all goes well, according to the trainer, the horse will ship west on Tuesday. Alice Clapham, Motion’s regular travel person, will accompany the race horse. Graham Motion said he might be here for the race.
“I had considered that Grade I race (Triple Bend) at Hollywood Park for him after the Ack Ack, but I decided it came up too soon,” Motion said by telephone Thursday. “I think this race fits him well. I’m trying to get him ready to run in some mile races later in the year.”
Race horse Rebellion’s resume now shows seven victories - all on turf or artificial surfaces - from 16 career starts and earnings of $467,367.
Among those who might join Rebellion in the gate are Hollywood Gold Cup winner Mast Track, Mostaccolli Mort, Racketeer, Storm Military, Surf Cat and Well Armed. Lava Man is also nominated but Sunday’s $400,000 Eddie Read Handicap (gr. I) on the grass is a more likely spot for him.
