Pyro Wins Northern Dancer Stakes at Churchill Downs

Winchell Thoroughbreds’ Pyro, ridden by jockey Shaun Bridgmohan, won the $190,925 Northern Dancer Stakes (gr. III) June 14, Saturday, at Churchill Downs.

Trained by Steve Asmussen, Pyro covered 1 1/6 miles in 1:43.53 and paid $5.60, $3.60 and $2.60. 1 3/4 lengths behind, My Pal Charlie, under jockey Jamie Theriot, placed $6.60 and $3.60. Another 2 1/4 lengths back, Visionaire with jockey Garrett Gomez showed $3.20.

Other 3-year-old horses that also raced in the Northern Dancer Stakes at Churchill Downs in order of finish: Recapturetheglory, Texas Wildcatter and Unbridled Vicar. Tiz Now Tiz Then was scratched.

“He was coming off two extremely disappointing efforts for a top-class horse,” horse trainer Steve Asmussen said referring to Pyro’s 8th place finish in the Kentucky Derby and 10th place finish in Keeneland‘s Blue Grass Stakes. “This was a quality field today and he handled what was thrown at him. He was a lot sharper in the race and looked comfortable the whole time. Hopefully we can map out a schedule that has some important races in it for 3-year-olds for the year.”

The Northern Dancer Stakes victory was worth $117,345 and increased Pyro’s career earnings to $1,174,163. The son of Pulpit, Pyro improved his record to 9-4-2-1.
