Pyro Wins Louisiana Derby at The Fair Grounds

Winchell Thoroughbreds’ Pyro cemented his position as one of the top two 2008 Kentucky Derby contenders when he won the $600,000 Louisiana Derby (gr. II) by 3 lengths this Saturday, March 8, at Fair Grounds Racecourse.

The Louisiana Derby is one of the key prep races leading to the 2008 Kentucky Derby (gr. I). Bred in Kentucky, Pyro, the Pulpit colt, is expected to make his final Kentucky Derby prep on April 12 in the $750,000 Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I) at Keeneland.

Trained by Steve Asmussen, Pyro, ridden by jockey Shaun Bridgmohan, ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.44 and paid $3.60, $2.80 and $2.20. The 60-1 long shot My Pal Charlie, under Julien Leparoux, took second place and returned $26 and $10.80. Another half a length behind, Yankee Bravo with jockey Alex Solis paid $5.20 to show.

Pyro now has a career record of 3-2-1 in six starts. Pyro collected $360,000 for the Louisiana Derby win, boosting his career earnings to $1,056,718 with graded earnings of $1,020,000.

Another 2008 Kentucky Derby hopeful, Blackberry Road, finished 4th in the Fair Grounds’s Louisiana Derby followed by Nick Zito trainee Stevil, Tale of Ekati, Majestic Warrior, J Be K and Unbridled Vicar.
