Pyro, Visionaire Headed For Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland on April 12
Pyro, winner of the Louisiana Derby and Risen Star Stakes, and Visionaire, winner of the Gotham Stakes, are both headed to the $750,000 Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I) at Keeneland on April 12, their connections said Monday.
The 1 1/8-mile Toyota Blue Grass Stakes is a premier prep race for the 2008 Kentucky Derby (gr. I). Last year, trainer Carl Nafzger used the race as a final tune-up for his champion colt Street Sense, 2007 Kentucky Derby winner, who finished second by a nose to Dominican in the Blue Grass Stakes.
The Blue Grass Stakes took on added significance on Monday when trainer Nick Zito said that it was likely going to be the final Kentucky Derby prep for Cool Coal Man, the winner of the Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) at Gulfstream Park. The Mineshaft colt is one of six nominees representing trainer Nick Zito.
Among the other accomplished three-year-olds nominated to the Toyota Blue Grass are WinStar Farm LLC’s Colonel John, winner of the Sham Stakes (gr. III); Mount Joy Stables Inc.’s Smooth Air, winner of the Hutcheson Stakes (gr. II); Zayat Stables LLC’s Eaton’s Gift, winner of the Swale Stakes (gr. II) and Z Fortune, winner of the LeComte Stakes (gr. III); George Schwary’s Georgie Boy, winner of the San Vicente Stakes (gr. II); West Point Thoroughbreds LLC’s El Gato Malo, winner of the San Rafael Stakes (gr. III); and Mr. and Mrs. William K. Warren Jr.’s Denis of Cork, winner of the Southwest Stakes (gr. III).
Todd Pletcher led all trainers with 25 nominees, including Tropical Park Derby (gr. III) winner Cowboy Cal.
Pyro is scheduled to work March 17 at Fair Grounds, be put on a van the afternoon of March 18, and arrive in Lexington, Kentucky, the morning of March 19, horse trainer Steve Asmussen said.
Last Sunday, Pyro closed as the 4-1 horse wagering favorite in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 2 with the unbeaten War Pass next at 9-2. War Pass, who beat Pyro in all three of their meetings last year, runs this Saturday in the $300,000 Tampa Bay Derby (gr. III).
