Proud Spell Wins 2008 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs

Brereton Jones’s Proud Spell, ridden by jockey Gabriel Saez, won the $500,000 Kentucky Oaks on Friday, May 2, at Churchill Downs, home of the 2008 Kentucky Derby.

Trained by Larry Jones, Proud Spell raced 1 1/8 miles in 1:50.01 and paid $8.80, $4.80 and $3.20. Little Belle, under jockey Rajiv Maragh, returned $6.40 and $4. Pure Clan with jockey Edgar Prado aboard is third paying $3.80 to show.

Three-year-old fillies that also ran in the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs this Friday: Golden Doc A, Bsharpsonata, Country Star, A to the Croft, Rasierra, Awesome Chic and Absolutely Cindy. Eight Belles and Elusive Lady were scratched.

Horse trainer Larry Jones will also saddle Eight Belles in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby. No trainer has won the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby in the same year since 1952.
