Poni Colada Wins Borderland Derby at Sunland Park

Poni Colada, ridden by jockey Alfredo Juarez, Jr., wins by 8 lengths in the $100,000 Borderland Derby at Sunland Park in New Mexico Saturday, February 16.

The Borderland Derby is a local prep race leading to the $600,000 Winstar Derby, also at Sunland Park, and later, the 2008 Kentucky Derby to be held on May 3 at Churchill Downs.

The 3-year-old son of Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Volponi, Poni Colada covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:47.19 and paid $5.40, $3 and $2.40. Cape Time under jockey Ken Tohill finished second and returned $3.20 and $2.20. No Jepordy with jockey Ignacio Puglisi aboard showed $2.60.

The 8-5 betting favorite, Poni Colada, earned $60,000 for the Borderland Derby win, doubling his lifetime earnings to more than $123,000. Poni Colada is trained by Steve Asmussen, who has now won the Borderland Derby four of the past seven years.

“I knew the pace was very fast, so we sat back and waited,” Poni Colada jockey Alfredo Juarez, Jr. said. “He started rolling really good down the backside. He’s a really nice horse.”

Capetown Royal came in fourth in Sunland Park’s Borderland Derby followed by Mr. Golden Ruler.
