Not Bourbon Wins Queen’s Plate at Woodbine

Not Bourbon stalked the pace early, surged into the lead in upper stretch, then held off hard-charging filly Ginger Grew by a head in the 149th running of the $1 million Queen’s Plate at Woodbine Racetrack, earning the affable horse trainer Roger Attfield yet another in a long list of Canadian thoroughbred racing accomplishments.

“I’m thrilled to death,” Attfield said. “This is what we were planning for all winter. They’re all special.”

The 68-year-old matched the mark Harry Gidding Jr. established in 1942 when Attfield was a 2-year-old living in England. Sunday’s Queen’s Plate victory was Attfield’s first since winning with Regal Discovery in 1995.

“It’s hard to win this race,” horse trainer Rober Attfield said. “Going into this winter I knew I had a horse that was capable of doing it. Some of my other horses, we were really running for some money. This is a very good horse.”

Not Bourbon‘s win earned owner Charles Fipke, a native of Edmonton, the $600,000 top prize on a breezy, cloudy afternoon. Not Bourbon, the 9-2 third choice, finished the 1 1/2 -mile race in 2:03.59 and paid $11.30, $5.10 and $3.40.

A head behind the winner Not Bourbon, Ginger Brew, under jockey Javier Castellano, returned $3.80 and $3. Solitaire with jockey Robert Landry came in third and paid $2.90 to show.

The Queen’s Plate Stakes is the first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. The second leg of Canada’s series is the Prince of Wales Stakes at 1 3/16 miles on dirt at Fort Erie July 13. The final race of the Canadian Triple Crown is the Breeders’ Stakes on turf at 1 1/2 miles on August 3 back at Woodbine.
