Northern Dancer Stakes at Churchill Downs June 14

Seven 3-year-old horses will compete with each other in the $175,000 Northern Dancer Stakes (gr. III) on Saturday, June 14, Churchill Downs where horse racing fans will see a rematch between 3 Kentucky Derby contenders.

Raced at 1 1/16 miles, the Northern Dancer Stakes field in post position order with jockeys and weight:

  1. Recapturetheglory ridden by jockey E. T. Baird carries 122 lbs.
  2. Pyro ridden by jockey Shaun Bridgmohan, 122 lbs.
  3. Tiz Now Tiz Then ridden by jockey Miguel Mena, 116 lbs.
  4. Unbridled Vicar ridden by jockey Calvin Borel, 116 lbs.
  5. My Pal Charlie ridden by jockey Jamie Theriot II, 116 lbs.
  6. Visionaire ridden by jockey Garrett Gomez, 120 lbs.
  7. Texas Wildcatter ridden by jockey Julien Leparoux, 116 lbs.

In his last race at Churchill Downs, Winchell Thoroughbreds’ Pyro finished a disappointing 8th, 15 lengths behind Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown. Pyro’s trainer Steve Asmussen is hoping for an improvement in Pyro this Saturday. Pyro will be reunited with regular jockey Shaun Bridgmohan and they will break from post position 2 in the Northern Dancer Stakes.

The Illinois Derby (gr. II) winner Recapturetheglory, 5th in the Kentucky Derby, is sharing the high weight of 122 pounds with fellow Kentucky Derby starter Pyro. Recapturetheglory was supposed to be one of the Preakness entries but a fever 10 days before the race caused him to be pulled out of the Preakness. Jockey E. T. Baird will be aboard Recapturetheglory this Saturday.

Another one of the Kentucky Derby entries racing in the Northern Dancer Stakes is Gotham Stakes winner Visionaire, who was 12th in the Kentucky Derby. Trained by Michael Matz, Visionaire will break from the 6th post position under jockey Garrett Gomez.

The Northern Dancer Stakes is the 8th race in Churchill Downs’s June 14 horse racing program. Included in its race card is the $1,000,000 Stephen Foster Handicap (gr. I, 10th race), where 2007 Horse of the Year Curlin is making his United States debut as a 4-year-old. Northern Dancer Stakes post time is 4:49 pm.
