Muhannak Wins The 2008 Breeders’ Cup Marathon at Santa Anita Park October 25
Richard Pegum’s Muhannak, ridden by jockey Patrick Smullen, held off a late run by Church Service to win the $517,540 Breeders’ Cup Marathon on October 25 Breeders’ Cup Day Saturday at Santa Anita Park.
Trained by Ralph Beckett, Muhannak covered 1 1/2 miles in 2:28.24 and paid $26.80, $10.80 and $6.20. Church Service, under jockey Edgar Prado, placed second and returned $9.60 and $6.80. Big Booster with jockey Rafael Bejarano aboard came in third and paid $6.80 to show.
Irish-bred Muhannak gave Europe its first victory on the second day of the 2008 Breeders’ Cup World Championships.
