Mistical Plan Wins Princess Rooney Handicap at Calder & An Entry In The Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint

J. Paul Reddam’s Mistical Plan, ridden by jockey Corey Nakatani, won the $400,000 Princess Rooney Handicap (gr. I) at Calder Race Course July 12 and became one of the Breeders’ Cup entries for the October 24 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint to be held at Santa Anita Park.

Trained by Doug O’Neill, Mistical Plan covered 6 furlongs in 1:10.76 and paid $18.20, $9.40 and $4.20. Miraculous Miss, under jockey Victor Espinoza, returned $4.80 and $2.80. Dream Rush with jockey Eibar Coa paid $2.10 to show.

“Mr. Reddam and I have always been real high on this filly, but I think she exceeded our expectations today,” said race horse trainer Doug O’Neill. “She has displayed enough talent, winning the Fair Grounds Oaks as a 3-year-old, and has shown excellence in routes and sprints. I think the game plan will be to stay with the sprints now.”

Mistical Plan is being considered for the Ballerina Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga on August 24. Last year, race horse trainer Doug O’Neill sent Maryfield to a 4th place finish in the 2007 Princess Rooney Handicap. Maryfield went on to win the Ballerina and the inaugural Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Monmouth Park.

Other fillies & mares who raced in Calder Race Course’s Princess Rooney Handicap in order of finish: Dixie Dreamer, Looky Yonder, Rgirldoesn’tbluff and Bereba.
