Midshipman Wins The 2008 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile At Santa Anita Park October 25
Darley Stable’s Midshipman, ridden by jockey Garrett Gomez, established himself as the top 2-year-old and the race horse to watch in the 2009 Kentucky Derby by winning the $1,951,080 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on October 25 Breeders’ Cup Day Saturday at Santa Anita Park.
Trained by Bob Baffert, Midshipman covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:40.94 and paid $9.20 , $4.40 and $3.20. Square Eddie, under jockey Rafael Bejarano, placed second and returned $5 and $3.80. Street Hero with jockey Alex Solis aboard came in third and paid $4.40 to show.
Race horse trainer had his second Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner in Midshipman after Vindication completed an undefeated campaign by rolling to victory at Arlington Park 2002. Jockey Garrett Gomez picked up his third win in the 2008 Breeders’ Cup. In earlier Breeders’ Cup races, Garrett Gomez won the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile aboard Albertus Maximus and the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint aboard Ventura.
Other horses that raced in the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita in order of finish: Terrain, Pioneerof the Nile, West Side Bernie, Gallant Son, Silent Valor, Azul Leon, Munnings, Bushranger and Mine That Bird. Elusive Bluff was scratched.
