Midnight Lute Wins The 2008 Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Santa Anita Park October 25
Midnight Lute, ridden by jockey Garrett Gomez, defended his title in the $1,832,000 Breeders’ Cup Sprint on October 25 Breeders’ Cup Day Saturday at Santa Anita Park.
Trained by Bob Baffert, Midnight Lute covered 6 furlongs in 1:07.08 and paid $7.40, $5 and $3.20. Fatal Bullet, under jockey Eurico Rosa Da Silva, placed second and returned $6.60 and $3.80. Street Boss with jockey David Flores aboard came in third and paid $2.40 to show.

Five-year-old Midnight Lute made Breeders’ Cup history as he became the first race horse to win the Breeders’ Cup Sprint two years in a row.
The Breeders’ Cup Sprint win was the day’s second for trainer Bob Baffert, whose Midshipman captured the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. While jockey Garrett Gomez rode his third Breeders’ Cup winner Saturday, becoming the first jockey in the 25-year Breeders’ Cup history to win that many Breeders’ Cup races in a day.
Other horses that raced in the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Santa Anita in order of finish: In Summation, Fabulous Strike, Sing Baby Sing, Black Seventeen and First Defence. Cost of Freedom was scratched.
