Mares Black Mamba & High Heel Sneakers Race With The Boys In The Hollywood Turf Cup at Hollywood Park December 6
Five-year-old mares Black Mamba and High Heel Sneakers, who have both won turf stakes against females at Hollywood Park, will tangle with males Saturday in the $250,000 Hollywood Turf Cup (gr. I) at 1 1/2 miles.
Meet-leading race horse trainer John Sadler entered New Zealand-bred Black Mamba, scratched from the Matriarch Sunday, while conditioner Ben Cecil entered English-bred High Heel Sneakers.
Champion Miss Alleged is the only female to win the Hollywood Turf Cup horse race in its 26-year history, scoring in 1991. Three other females have finished second: Queen to Conquer in 1981, Zalataia in 1983 and Megahertz in 2004.
“I know John has been dying to run Black Mamba a mile and a half,” said Larry Benavidez, assistant to race horse trainer John Sadler.
Black Mamba rallied to win the 1 1/4-mile Beverly Hills Handicap (gr. II) at Hollywood Park in June. She also finished a closing third in the Yellow Ribbon Stakes (gr. I) the past 2 years. Black Mamba’s biggest win was in the John C. Mabee Handicap (gr. I) at Del Mar in August.
Black Mamba raced at 1 1/2 miles once in her native New Zealand, finishing fifth on a soft course in the 2007 New Zealand Oaks. She raced 4 times against males there, her only victory in a maiden race in 2006.
Race horse trainer Ben Cecil said he had limited options for a female running long on turf after High Heel Sneakers captured the 12-furlong Hermosa Beach Handicap at Hollywood Park last November 9 for her first United States victory in 4 starts.
High Heel Sneakers ran five times at 1 1/2 miles in her native England, including a second-place against males in the Empire Property Group Conditions Stakes at Goodwood in June, 2007.
