Macho Again Wins Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga July 27
West Point Thoroughbreds’ Macho Again, ridden by jockey Julien Leparoux, won the $500,000 Jim Dandy Stakes (gr. II) at Saratoga on Sunday, July 27.
Trained by Dallas Stewart, Macho Again covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:51.16 and paid $18.40, $5.30 and $3.40. Half a length behind, Pyro, under jockey Shaun Bridgmohan, returned $3.40 and $2.90. Tiz Now Tiz Then with jockey Miguel Mena paid $4.70 to show.
The Macho Uno colt, Macho Again, will now point for the meet’s biggest race, the 139th running of the $1 million Travers Stakes (gr. I) on Saturday, August 23. The last three Jim Dandy Stakes winners — Street Sense (2007), Bernardini (2006) and Flower Alley (2005) — went on to become Travers Stakes winners.
“This is my first stakes win as a trainer at Saratoga, so I am very excited,” said race horse trainer Dallas Stewart of Macho Again, the Preakness runner-up who came back to run 5th in the Belmont Stakes. “He’s a good horse, but he needed to step up. The pace was beautiful; he’s a stalker. The Travers would be great if he comes out of this good and everything is good.”
Other horses that raced in Saratoga’s Jim Dandy Stakes in order of finish: Tale of Ekati, Anak Nakal, Mint Lane and Belmont Stakes winner Da’ Tara. Alaazo was scratched.
