Love Handles Wins Turf Feature at Churchill Downs Wednesday
Love Handles rallied to win by a head in the $43,880 Americana Community Center Purse on Wednesday at Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby.
Ridden by jockey Robby Albarado, Love Handles covered 1 mile on turf in 1:36.31 for her sixth win in 26 career starts.
Callie’s Joy led the field of 10 through the first 6 furlongs, but Love Handles moved 4 wide entering the stretch, just outside Royal Leah, and they took the lead from Cure for Sale at the 16th pole, racing together to the finish.
Love Handles paid $9.20, $4.80 and $3.40, while Royal Leah returned $3.60 and $2.60. Cure for Sale was another 3/4 of a length back in third and paid $6.20.
Owned by Nancy Vanier and Cartwright Thoroughbreds, the 5-year-old daughter of Sahm out of the Magloire mare Hip Huggers earned $26,908 for the win, increasing her career total to $259,901.
