John Battaglia Memorial Stakes at Turfway Park on March 1
The $100,000 John Battaglia Memorial Stakes will be contested by 11 3-year-old horses on Saturday, March 1, at Turfway Park in Florence, Kentucky.
Raced at 1 1/16 miles, the John Battaglia Memorial Stakes is one of the prep races for Turfway Park’s Lane’s End Stakes on March 22 as well as the 2008 Kentucky Derby to be held on May 3 at Churchill Downs.

The Frank Brothers-trained Big Glen won the $50,000 WEBN Stakes by 1 1/4 lengths in closing fashion at Turfway Park Polytrack last February 2. Out of the Unaccounted For mare Zamba Canuta, Big Glen, owned by John T.L. Jones Jr. and Bill Jones, also broke his maiden at Turfway Park September 23.
Big Glen will again face the runners-up in the WEBN Stakes, Your Round and Mr. Harry in Saturday’s John Battaglia Memorial Stakes.
Absolutely Cindy finished a disappointing 6th over Indian Blessing in the Silverbulletday Stakes at Fair Grounds last February 9.
The Proud Citizen colt, Instill, trained by John C. Wainwright for Sharon Morgan, has not been out of the money in six starts. Jockey John McKee will take the mount this Saturday.
The John Battaglia Memorial Stakes is scheduled as the 11th race in Turfway Park’s March 1 horse racing program. Estimated post time is 5:45 pm EST.
