Jockey Jose Lezcano Rides 6 Winners at Monmouth Park

Jockey Jose Lezcano tied a Monmouth Park record by riding 6 winners on Sunday, including Coli Bear in the $70,000 Blue Sparkler Stakes.

Jose Lezcano, who now leads the track’s rider standings with 42 victories, won the 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 9th and 10th races on Monmouth Park’s June 22 horse racing card. He tied the mark first set by Walter Blum in 1961, then equaled in 1984 by Chris Antley, in 1987 by Julie Krone and by Joe Bravo in 1994, 2002, 2005 and 2006.

The record-tying performance came a day after jockey Jose Lezcano, a 23-year-old native of Panama, escaped serious injury when he was unseated by his mount during a race.

In Sunday’s feature Blue Sparkler Stakes race, jockey Jose Lezcano and Coli Bear overtook My Sister Sue in the deep stretch to win by a half-length. Trained by Bruce Levine, the 5-year-old mare covered the six furlongs over a fast main track in 1:09 3-5 and returned $11, $5 and $3.40.

My Sister Sue, who led for most of the race, paid $4.20 and $3, while Princess Janie was another 5 lengths back in third, returning $4.40.

“We went fast early on, but my horse still had something left in the lane when My Sister Sue got tired,” jockey Jose Lezcano said. “She ran well and dug down for me.”

In the co-feature, Chitoz equaled the track record of 1:01.85 for 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf while running away with the $60,000 Anderson Fowler Stakes.

Trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by jockey Joe Bravo, the 3-year-old colt Chitoz paid $4.80, $2.80 and $2.10. Dicey D J was 1 1/2 lengths back in second, returning $2.80 and $2.20, while Sheer Faith was another 2 1/2 lengths back in third and paid $3.
