In Summation Favorite in Santa Anita’s Palos Verdes Handicap
The 5-year-old Florida-bred In Summation, whose career has been revived over synthetic surfaces, will carry high weight of 122 pounds and with Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Midnight Lute skipping the race, In Summation is a probable favorite among 7 entrants in the $150,000 Palos Verdes Handicap (gr. II) at Santa Anita Park’s Monday program.
The complete field of 4-year-old and up horses racing in Santa Anita’s Palos Verdes Handicap lines up as follows with jockeys and weights:
In Summation ridden by jockey Corey Nakatani carries 122 lbs.
Surf Cat ridden by jockey Alex Solis, 120 lbs.
Barbecue Eddie ridden by jockey Aaron Gryder, 116 lbs.
Ididn’tdoanything ridden by jockey Joseph Talamo, 113 lbs.
Fly Dorcego ridden by jockey David Flores, 114 lbs.
Copa de Plata ridden by jockey Victor Espinoza, 113 lbs.
Soul City Slew ridden by jockey Michael Baze, 114 lbs.
After winning his first five races as a 2-year-old, the dark bay owned by Waterford Stable, In Summation, experienced a 10-race losing streak before victorious over the turf at Monmouth Park last June 23. In Summation won 3 of his next 4 when exposed to synthetic surfaces including his first graded event in Del Mar’s Bing Crosby Handicap (gr. I). His only synthetic setback came when missing by three-quarters of a length while a much-troubled second in Hollywood Park’s Vernon O. Underwood Stakes (gr. III) last December 2.
In Summation, who will be rejoined by jockey Corey Nakatani in the Palos Verdes, began 2008 with a one-length victory over Santa Anita’s Cushion Track in the El Conejo Handicap (gr. III) on New Year’s Day. Trained by Christophe Clement, the son of Put It Back is the field’s leading earner with a net of $815,166 from an overall record of 9-5-0 in 20 races.
In Summation’s competition includes Surf Cat, who looked sensational in 2006 while winning three Grade II stakes by a combined eight lengths before going on the shelf for 13 months. Surf Cat ran second sprinting in his first two comeback efforts over synthetic tracks last year before fading to fifth in his last out, the Oak Tree Mile (gr. II) on October 7.
Regular rider Alex Solis will be aboard the 6-year-old trained by Bruce Headley for Aase Headley and Marsha Naify. Surf Cat carries second high weight of 120 pounds. He has earned $687,420 with a 7-5-0 mark in 14 career starts.
Copa de Plata is a newcomer from Puerto Rico where he won his last start in the Dawn Glory (gr. III) by 6 1/2 lengths before being sent to the mainland and placed in the care of trainer Brian Koriner. “He’s a big, pretty horse, and he’s got a lot of ability,” said Brian Koriner. Copa de Plata has compiled 5-3-1 record in 10 starts.
It was 18 years ago that another newcomer from Puerto Rico, Mister Frisky, won three races in a row at Santa Anita including the Santa Anita Derby, one of the prep races leading to the Kentucky Derby, to run his unbeaten streak to a then-modern day record of 16 races.
Brian Koriner also conditions Barbecue Eddie, who placed in Oak Tree’s Ancient Title in October prior to his big effort against In Summation in the El Conejo Handicap. The lightly raced 4-year-old Maryland-bred son of Stormy Atlantic is seeking his first stakes victory.
The 56th running of the Palos Verdes Handicap will go as the eighth race on a 10-race program celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. First post is at 12 noon.
