Honour Devil Wins UAE Derby at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse
Honour Devil, ridden by jockey John Murtagh, pulled away in the stretch for an easy 4 3/4-length victory in the $2 million UAE Derby, one of the 2008 Kentucky Derby prep races, at Nad Al Sheba racetrack.
The 4-year-old colt bred in Argentina, Honour Devil, is trained by South African Michael de Kock, who also trains the runner-up Royal Vintage. Honour Devil is owned by Dubai’s Sheik Khalifa. Honour Devil has won four of five career starts.
Zayat Stables’ Massive Drama, America’s top hope in the UAE Derby at 1,800 meters (about 1 1/8 miles), led the field to the straight but was hard-pressed from that point on under Garrett Gomez for trainer Dale Romans. Strike the Deal was the first to sweep past to lead briefly before being tackled by the Mike de Kock duo. Massive Drama faded to 9th.
Cocoa Beach, a 4-year-old filly owned by Dubai-based Godolphin Racing, finished third followed by Light Green, Strike The Deal, My Indy, Ukrainian, Iide Kenshin, Massive Drama and Numaany.
