The 2008 Breeders’ Cup Challenge goes to Philadelphia Park this Saturday, July 19, with the $250,000 Greenwood Cup Stakes where the winner will be one of the Breeders’ Cup entries for the inaugural Breeders’ Cup Dirt Marathon to be held on October 25 at Santa Anita Park.
Raced at 1 1/2 miles, the Greenwood Cup Stakes field of horses with jockeys and weight line up as follows:
Barcola ridden by jockey Kendrick Carmouche carries 122 lbs.
Bureaucratic ridden by jockey Shaun Bridgmohan, 114 lbs.
Three in the Bag ridden by jockey Mario Pino, 117 lbs.
Solemn Promise with rider to be announced, 114 lbs.
Phil the Power ridden by jockey Anthony Black, 114 lbs.
Evening Attire ridden by jockey Jose Espinoza, 114 lbs.
Carrying top weight of 122 pounds, Barcola is a multiple stakes winner. In his most recent start, Barcola finished 3rd to 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Curlin in the Stephen Foster Handicap (gr. I) at Churchill Downs last June 14. Jockey Kendrick Carmouche will be riding Barcola in the Greenwood Cup Stakes for race horse trainer Mark Henning and owner Paul Reddam.
The oldest horse in the field, 10-year-old Evening Attire, has 14 wins with 9 graded victories and was 1st or 2nd in 30 of 68 starts. Among Evening Attire’s wins include the 2002 Jockey Club Gold Cup (gr. I) and the 2002 and 2004 Saratoga Breeders Cup (gr. II). Evening Attire will be ridden by jockey Jose Espinoza this Saturday.
The Greenwood Cup Stakes is the 8th race in Philadelphia Park’s July 19 horse racing program. Greenwood Cup post time is 3:22 pm EDT.
