Undefeated Giant Moon is out to prove that he can be in the top Kentucky Derby contenders list in the 56th running of the $250,000 Gotham Stakes (gr. III) at Aqueduct on Saturday, March 8.
Raced at 1 1/16 miles, the Gotham Stakes is the first stop of the Triple Crown trail in New York and one of the three 2008 Kentucky Derby prep races scheduled for Saturday. The other two being the Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds and the El Camino Real Derby at Bay Meadows.
The complete field of Aqueduct’s Gotham Stakes this Saturday with jockeys and weight:
Giant Moon ridden by jockey Ramon Dominguez carries 120 lbs.
Laysh Laysh Laysh ridden by jockey Mario Pino, 116 lbs.
Roman Emperor ridden by jockey Jeremy Rose, 116 lbs.
Saratoga Russell ridden by jockey Eibar Coa, 116 lbs.
Southern Terminus ridden by jockey Stewart Elliott, 116 lbs.
Holidaze ridden by jockey Michael Luzzi, 116 lbs.
Texas Wildcatter ridden by jockey Norberto Arroyo, Jr., 116 lbs.
Larrys Revenge ridden by jockey Joe Bravo, 116 lbs.
Ling Ling Qi ridden by jockey Rajiv Maragh, 116 lbs.
Visionaire ridden by jockey Jose Lezcano, 116 lbs.
Carrying top weight of 120 pounds, the son of Giant’s Causeway, Giant Moon, has a record of 4-for-4 and is being trained by Richard Schosberg. With no graded stakes earnings to fall back on, New York-bred Giant Moon needs to start accumulating money in that category if he is to make the 2008 Kentucky Derby on May 3 at Churchill Downs. From Giant Moon’s performance in his 4 starts, there is little reason to believe that he will not do well in the Gotham Stakes this Saturday.
Visionaire is coming off a 2 3/4 length defeat behind Pyro and Z Fortune, two of the leading 2008 Kentucky Derby contenders, in the Risen Star Stakes last February 9 at the Fair Grounds. Horse trainer Michael Matz, who trained 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, is the one conditioning Visionaire. Jockey Jose Lezcano will be riding Visionaire this Saturday.
Horse trainer Todd Pletcher has three entries in the Gotham Stakes: Southern Terminus, Holidaze and Texas Wildcatter.
West Point Thoroughbreds’ Saratoga Russell will make his first start beyond 6 furlongs in the Gotham Stakes. Jockey Eibar Coa will take the mount for horse trainer Richard Violette.
The Gotham Stakes is the 9th horse race in Aqueduct’s 10-race program on Saturday, March 8. Estimated post time is 4:50 pm EST.
