Ginger Punch Defends Title Against Zenyatta In The 2008 Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic

Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Moss’s Zenyatta will put her 8-for-8 record on the line against 7 other fillies and mares in the 1 1/8-mile Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic, formerly known as the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, including defending champion Ginger Punch, owned by Stronach Stable.

SBG Global RacebookZenyatta, a 4-year-old daughter of Street Cry, began her racing career last November 22 at Hollywood Park. In 2008, Zenyatta has posted 6 graded stakes victories, the most recent coming in the Lady’s Secret at Santa Anita, home of the 2008 Breeders’ Cup, on September 27.

Jockey Mike Smith, who has been aboard for Zenyatta’s past 5 victories, has the call Friday and will break from post position 1 for race horse trainer John Shirreffs.

Ginger Punch, who lost in her only matchup with Zenyatta which came in the Apple Blossom at Oaklawn Park in April, enters the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic off a runner-up finish to Godolphin Racing’s Cocoa Beach in the Beldame.

Trained by Bobby Frankel, Stronach Stable’s Ginger Punch has won 5 of 7 starts in 2008 and will break from post position 6 under jockey Rafael Bejarano.

Godolphin will be represented in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic by Cocoa Beach and 3-year-old filly Music Note. Also trained by Saeed bin Suroor, Music Note has won 5 of 7 career starts and most recently won the Gazelle at Belmont Park by 8 1/2 lengths.
