Georgie Boy Wins San Felipe Stakes
Georgie Boy, racing beyond a sprint distance under jockey Michael Baze, won the $250,000 San Felipe Stakes, one of the 2008 Kentucky Derby prep races, at Santa Anita Park on Saturday, March 15.
Trained by Kathy Walsh for owner George Schwary, Georgie Boy covered 1 1/6 miles in 1:42.35 and paid $4.80, $3.20 and $2.60. Second place Gayego under jockey Mike Smith returned $4.60 and $3.40. Bob Black Jack with jockey David Flores is third and paid $3 to show.
Santa Anita Park’s leading jockey, Rafael Bejarano, was supposed to ride Georgie Boy in the San Felipe Stakes but was replaced by Michael Baze when Rafael Bejarano was injured last Thursday.
Jockey Michael Baze had not been atop Georgie Boy since a 3rd place finish in his maiden debut at Hollywood Park last June 16 for owner-breeder George Schwary and trainer Kathy Walsh.
“George (Schwary) and I talked it over and it came down to a choice between Victor Espinoza and Michael,” horse trainer Kathy Walsh said. “They’re both great, fine riders. We just leaned toward the fact that Michael got on thishorse for me quite a bit last spring and got to ride him once.”
The son of Tribal Rule, Georgie Boy, previously had 2 victories from the Del Mar Futurity (gr. I) and San Vicente Stakes (gr. II) at 7 furlongs. The San Felipe’s winning purse of $120,000 raised his earnings to $496,806 from an overall record of 4-2-1 in seven starts.
Other horses that raced in the San Felipe Stakes: Indian Sun, Chop House George, High Stakes Silver, Southwest, Shediak and Go for Cover.
