Georgie Boy Comes Back To Win San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita

Georgie Boy, ridden by jockey Rafael Bejarano, won the $147,000 San Vicente Stakes by 3 lengths Sunday at Santa Anita Park and put his name on the list of 2008 Kentucky Derby contenders.

The San Vicente Stakes is one of the prep races for the 2008 Kentucky Derby.

After being idle since the Del Mar Futurity on September 5, Georgie Boy, trained by Kathy Walsh for George Schwary, covered 7 furlongs in 1:20.01 and paid $7.80 and $3.20.

“He was a little upset today. It was his first race in five months. I thought he rated real well. He was a little rank the first quarter mile, then he settled off. We wanted to take him off it (the pace) a little. He did it last year real well and he seems to always run better from off the pace,” Kathy Walsh said. “If anything, the time off gave him some time to let him grow and mature. I ran him three times (as a 2-year-old) at Del Mar and for a horse that gives you so much, you want to give him a chance. He gave his heart every time he ran and I thought he just needed a rest. He had nothing wrong with him and Mr. Schwary has been marvelous about letting me do whatever I wanted with the horse.”

Into Mischief, who hasn’t raced since the CashCall Futurity at Hollywood Park on December 22, under jockey Victor Espinoza was second and returned $2.60 as the 7-5 wagering favorite. Massive Drama with jockey Garrett Gomez was another length back in 3rd.

Red Hot Flame was fourth. Cardinal Zin was scratched. There was no show wagering because of the small field.

When asked what might be next for Georgie Boy, Kathy Walsh said, “We’re going to try and point somewhere towards the (Kentucky) Derby. I don’t know. He’s nominated to the race in Hot Springs, too (Grade II Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park, $200,000, 1 1/16 miles, March 15). We’ll kind of play it by ear. We’ll get him out of this race and make sure he’s in good shape and it didn’t take too much out of him.”
