Gayego Wins San Pedro Stakes at Santa Anita Park
Third choice Gayego made an upset as outran the favorite Sea of Pleasure by 2 3/4 lengths in the $79,700 San Pedro Stakes at Santa Anita Park Sunday, January 20.
The Kentucky-bred son of 1992 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile champion Gilded Time ridden by jockey Mike Smith, Gayego covered 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:13.07 and paid $10.20, $4.00, $2.80. Coming in next is the formerly undefeated Sea of Pleasure, with jockey Michael Baze aboard, returned $3.20 and $2.20. Cardinal Zin under jockey Alex Solis is third and paid $3.60 to show.
“He broke bad last time and he got a lot of kick back in behind horses. He’s more mature now and I was expecting him to run a big race today.” Gayego’s trianer Paolo Lobo said. We’re going to try two turns with him and the way he’s settling, I think he’ll get better. Yes, we did nominate him to the Triple Crown. You have to dream.”
Three-year-old horses that also ran in Sunday’s San Pedro Stakes at Santa Anita Park are: Tommys Luck, Meal Penalty, Waafi, Fire Break and Bear Creek. Latin Lobo was scratched.
