Gayego, ridden by jockey Mike Smith, won the $1-million Arkansas Derby (gr. II) on Saturday, April 12, at Oaklawn Park.
The Arkansas Derby is one of the last major prep races for the 2008 Kentucky Derby.
Trained by Paulo Lobo, Gayego raced 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.63 and paid $6.40, $4.40 and $3.80. Z Fortune with jockey Robby Albarado returned $7.40 and $6. Tres Borrachos under jockey Tyler Baze paid $14.80 to show.
Indian Sun came in fourth in the Arkansas Derby followed by My Pal Charlie, Isabull, Golden Yank, Blackberry Road, King’s Silver Son, Jazz in the Park, Ablaze With Spirit, Liberty Bull and Shekinah. Victory Pete was scratched.
